Fizz
I never thought I'd take my art seriously. Sometimes I hope I never do. Fizz has and continues to be my playground: an experiment of texture, layering, movement, and broader look at particles that make up a whole.
Welcome to Fizz
Someday I hope you'll get to read Playground by Richard Powers.
He told me about an octopus, playing with a glass bottle in the middle of the ocean.
He showed me a mother walking along the beach with her child who finds a similar glass bottle, and he picks it up to throw away.
The mother, an marine biologist, tells her child to leave it where it is. Yes, the bottle never grew there.
It's not natural. It seems out of place.
But it belongs.
It's become an important part of the ecosystem, hosting life in barnacles and joy in the octopus that plays.
We can't control many things about the world we're given, but we can always control our perspective. May you sit with complexity, make the most of what's in front of you, and most importantly, never forget how to play.
I made Everyone's Playground for a 2 year old. I was a nanny in my post grad interim, taking community print classes before I moved on to a big girl desk. When I said goodbye to Gema, I wrote her a card and gave her this print.
Sizzle.
Pop.
Fizz.
A fleeting moment.
A flurry of fragile air.
The invisible takes form
in its surrounding solids.
Light becomes a playmate.
Layers become a friend.
